Report by Thomas Müller

The Beginning

In November 1998 some weird german ATiCs decided to organise an ATiC meeting in the middle of Germany, in the ´Heart of Europe´, in the Sauerland.

First we thought of a camping yard as the meeting place not knowing which difficulties were waiting. In Germany camping yards are like youth hostels without a ceiling: speed limit is like walking, no noise, no fireplace, and night´s sleep at 10 p.m. Unbelievable.
One owner of a camping yard showed us his pick-up with a giant roo-bar which he uses to remove unpleasant guests ...

So we were happy to hear about a hotel with enough room for a lot of tents, a good cuisine, a well tasting beer, and experiences with biker´s meetings: the ´Hotel Schwermer´ in Kirchhundem-Heinsberg.

After checking the hotel we could offer accommodations in tents, in the hay, and in hotel rooms.

The manager of the hotel offered food, drinks, barbecue, and breakfast. We decided "ATiCs go Hilton" and published the 7th meeting on the ATiC homepage. Soon we got such a lot of registrations it seemed to become a big meeting.

The meeting

On Friday before Whitsun we met at the hotel and made use of the evening by testing the beer, the cuisine, and the fireplace at our own party shed. It became a big meeting.

The next morning the ATiCs started for the prepared guided tours though everyone could learn the meaning of ´it's raining cats and dogs´.

One tour led through the Sauerland around Heinsberg

and one tour was a trip to a moto cross area where the ATiCs had the opportunity to do some (easy?) offroad (or watch others doing).

For the roadbook see the touralong three lakes. At the Sorpe lake follow the signs to the Moehne lake and further onalong Bundesstrasse B7 to Menden. In the village Vosswinkel turn right as signed to the airfield of Arnsberg-Echthausen. Opposite of the airfield you will find the moto cross area.

Getting wet was a bad thing happening to us but in the afternoon the sun came out again.

In the evening it was party time again. The hotel manager organised a buffet, beer was flowing, people were talking (some even about bikes and biking I heard), later some were only trying to talk, and the night was too short (or too cold :-)).

Luckily on Sunday the weather was fine. We repeated the tours to the Eder lake, andalong the three lakes so everyone had the opportunity to see the landscape of the Sauerland. In the afternoon some ATiCs started a tour through the Siegerland.

Instead of offroad (the moto cross area was closed for us on Sunday :-( ) we made a longer trip to the river Rhine and back through the wonderful landscapes of the Bergisches Land, the Siegerland, the Westerwald, and the valley of the river Wied.

That evening the famous ATiC BBQ happened. With around 120 bikers (really a great meeting) we had a lot of fun, beer, aniseed brandy, meat, blondie, salad, talking ...  and a trial to do table dancing.

On Monday it was time for departure. Though the first one left early in the morning it lastedall day until the last one was on his way home.

The organisers hope that you got a good impression of our wonderful area, enjoyed the tours in and around the Sauerland and had as much fun as possible.

CU next meeting.
