This is a trip I made in 1997 to see and drive some of the most popular passes of the Alps and other places worth for sightseeing.

I spent 6 days in the Alps and needed two for arrival and return. On the whole trip I avoided to drive motorways.

Starting poin2000t and Finish was Luedenscheid in the Sauerland, where I live. So you may have to change the first and the last day tour depending on your own hometown. On the other hand I also had routes on these days which were worth to ride on.

I will not recommend every place worth for sightseeing. Remember: The trip leaded through the alps. There are places everywhere, everyday, everyway.

Disclaimer: This is only a report of a tour I made. Everyone who lives near or in the areas I visited might know better routes or find mistakes in my descriptions. You are allowed to hold them or give a tip for correction. Others who take this 'roadbook' for riding will do it on their own risk. No one should say I didn't warn him: some days I needed 10 hours and more for a day's trip.

Remember the german umlaut. I will write an ae, ue, oe, ss instead.
In south tirolia I tried to give both names of a waypoint, german and italian.

Below is a comparison of the signs used for street numbers in the countries I visited. ? is used for 0-9.

A word about Weil am Rhein:

A nice little town but not very experienced in tourism. No fast food restaurants or other not to expensive possibilities to eat. The hotel was very small (I don't remember the name anymore) and hidden behind other houses near the southern town exit. But you can get good value for your money.

A word about the valley of Aosta:

It is the italian side of the Mt. Blanc. From the city of Aosta you can't see it. I stayed only one night and hadn't the time to go up the valley. But I think the sight seeing will be worth the trip.

At the airfield of Aosta is a hotel where you might check in late. But it's loud, simple and expensive. Going down the valley beneath Aosta on the SS26 there is 'Aosta camping' on the left side. It's hidden behind a railway embankment so you can see only a sign at the road. There was only one train all the night so I could bear it.

A word about Ticino:

Ticino isn't worth to talk about. In Ticino there are only two little albergos. One was booked up, the other one was cheap. But it was late and dark and I was tired. The main thing I remember was a great (really great sight) thunderstorm. In the light of the lightnings I could see that I was nearly at the edge of the hills around the Lago di Como but not near enough to see the water.

Some words about Rovereto:

There is much industry in Rovereto. So I wanted to stay the night north of Rovereto in the valley of the river Etsch. No chance. On the way to Trento I found only one albergo and it was closed for the next two or three hours till I could check in.
So I drove around spending time. Near the motorway entrance 'Rovereto-Nord' I found a sign for the Lago di Cei high in the mountains beside the valley. Up there I found one of the most beautiful lakes I ever saw and nearby the 'Albergo Lago di Cei'. This is an area worth to visit only for sightseeing. Of course I decided at once to stay the night here. After returning home again I tried to find the lake or the albergo on a map but both are too small.

Some words about Iselsberg:

There isn't really a village. Only some houses along the road. Nearly every house rents bed and breakfast for less money. This time I didn't stay in Lienz because I could see the little pass of the Iselsberg. From my room I had a great view over the valley of Lienz.

Some words about Rodeneck:

The valley of Pusteria is wonderful. I stayed several holidays for skiing and walking there. Though only a little village there are some good hotels in Rodeneck. I spent the night in the 'Gasthof Zum Loewen'.

Some words about Fuessen:

The most famous things near Fuessen are the two castles of king Ludwig II and his father, Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau. There are also the Forggensee, some mountains and behind Neuschwanstein the Marienbruecke.

I stayed the night at camping Osterreimer which you can find by following the B16 in the direction of Marktoberdorf. From its lakesite you can see Neuschwanstein.
